Characteristics of the workplace
At the workplace, toxicological examinations of samples of patients' biological material (blood, urine, gastric lavage) and possibly other samples related to the case (unknown liquid, powder) are carried out for clinical and judicial purposes. The basis is a systematic analysis for the presence of previously unknown noxes (medicines, drugs and other xenobiotics) and their metabolites for the differential diagnosis of acute intoxications and the diagnosis of drug addiction. Levels of toxicologically significant substances such as paracetamol, salicylates, antiepileptics, antidepressants, ethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol and others are monitored to monitor the effectiveness of therapy in case of intoxication. The level of carbonylhemoglobin in the blood is also determined in case of smoke gas poisoning. In addition, various control examinations are carried out to monitor the use of therapy (antihypertensives, hypolipidemics, NTBC, etc.) and abstinence from drugs during medical detoxification programs. The laboratory has introduced an examination of the mucus of newborns of mothers with suspected drug addiction for the diagnosis of fetal exposure to drugs in utero. Primarily for forensic reasons, hair analysis is carried out, which reveals the use of drugs even after a longer period of time, when they are no longer detectable in blood or urine.
The toxicology department conducts examinations not only for VFN, but also for all medical facilities in Prague, in the territory of the Central Bohemian Region and, if necessary, for the entire republic. The department provides 24-hour emergency service. Examination requests from private individuals can be arranged both by phone and in person during normal daily operations.
